Centro de Investigação em Energia REN - State Grid, S.A. (R&D NESTER), an entity 50% owned by the REN Group, was established in May 2013 with the goal of creating a global and independent R&D centre, with a multicultural DNA and a long run strategic thinking, innovating for a smart, clean, efficient and sustainable energy system.

The R&D Center's works shall be pursued through three interdependent acting vectors:

  • Research, development, innovation and demonstration in the power transmission area;
  • Consulting services in the scope of R&D activities;
  • Education and training services.

R&D AND INNOVATION POLICY

Following the commitments expressed in the Company's bylaws approved by the Shareholders (Feb 27, 2013), in particular the statement "promote, both internally and in partnership with other entities, the research, development and innovation in the field of services provided, business organization, processes and communication "as well as in the statement referred in Centre for Research in Energy REN - State Grid, S.A. (R&D Nester) Shareholders Agreement (Feb 27, 2013), in which it is explicit that "The company's purpose is to implement a Research and Development Centre in Portugal dedicated to research, development, innovation and demonstration in the power transmission and system management areas, the provision of consulting services and education and training services within the scope of these activities, as well as the development of all other related activities and the provision of services which are complementary, related with or accessory to the abovementioned purpose.", the Management of the Centro de Investigação em Energia REN - State Grid, S.A. (R&D Nester), confirms its commitment to the purpose of:

1. Consolidating a culture of innovation and creativity;

2. Ensuring that the needs and expectations of stakeholders are met through the development of R&D and innovation projects in the field of energy systems, guaranteeing innovative solutions tailored to their needs;

3. Developing innovative, efficient, sustainable and value-added solutions for the energy sector;

4. Encouraging continuous improvement of the Research, Development and Innovation Management System performance and its alignment with the company's innovation strategy;

5. Setting up and managing a portfolio of research, development and innovation projects, consistent with the organisation's innovation strategy;

6. Having an active participation in Projects under national and international R&D&I framework programs (usually developed in consortia with R&D partners such as universities, industry research centers, and innovative SMEs), allowing working on cutting-edge topics together with other experts, while minimizing the financial risk of investing in emerging technologies. These projects should make it possible to test new products, services, and markets in multi-scale pilot projects;

7. Building long lasting relationships with stakeholders in the energy sector, by celebrating collaborative partnerships with national and international R&D institutions, industrial partners and energy associations, establishing appropriate interactions with scientific and technological community, with the market and the society in general, to thrive a global technology network;

8. Ensuring full compliance with the requirements expressed in the Portuguese Standard NP 4457;

9. Ensuring full compliance with the legal requirements applicable to R&D Nester activities.

QUALITY, ENVIRONMENT AND SAFETY CERTIFICATION

R&D Nester is a certified company (since 2014) according to ISO 9001, ISO 45001 and ISO 14001, making part of the integrated management system of REN (Portuguese TSO and R&D Nester shareholder). 


RESEARCH, DEVELOPEMNT AND INNOVATION CERTIFICATION 

R&D Nester is a certified company (since 2015) in research, development and innovation activities on solutions in the power systems field, according to the National standard on R&D and Innovation NP 4457.
