AVANGUARD Project (May/2026 - May/2030)
Advanced Data-Driven Strategies for Optimized Long Duration Energy Storage Deployment in Multi-Energy Networks
AVANGUARD aims to develop and test a fully free, open-source tool suite, supported by a dedicated free-to-access Data Hub, to assess and optimise the role of Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES) in the European energy system. The platform enables grid operators, plant developers and managers, energy planners, policymakers, traders and regulators to evaluate LDES techno-economic viability, grid reliability impacts and system value across different energy and market contexts.
The project integrates partner-developed tools and shared use case data
into a single "one-stop-shop" digital platform, co-developed with stakeholders
and validated for usability and effectiveness. It supports the full LDES
lifecycle, from strategic planning and optimal siting to network validation,
LDES dispatch optimisation, market participation, regulatory assessment and
technology scale-up.
AVANGUARD demonstrates the effectiveness of the platform through a
pan-European validation campaign covering four use cases in Spain-Portugal,
Denmark-Sweden, Italy and Croatia. These use cases involve local grid
operators, heterogeneous datasets and different LDES technologies, including
innovative pumped hydro, Carnot batteries, electrochemical storage,
power-to-heat and power-to-hydrogen solutions. A dedicated training campaign
introduces European stakeholders to the platform and supports wider uptake of
LDES deployment.
